Which contract is right for my business?
The acceptance contract is the most important cost factor when operating a card terminal. It defines the contract duration, fee model and transaction costs. Many contracts also include a terminal rental.
In general: higher fixed monthly costs usually mean lower (or no) per-transaction fees. And vice versa. This allows businesses to choose a pricing model that fits their needs.
Flat rate tariffs are ideal for businesses with a high volume of small transactions, since no per-transaction fees apply. If you only use your card reader occasionally or seasonally, a flexible plan without monthly fees could help you save money.
.
Mobile or stationary? How will you use the card reader?
Where do you want to accept card payments? While it may seem obvious, payment locations vary widely: at a kiosk, tableside in a restaurant or at a market stall.
The good news: there's a suitable card reader for every use case. In general, we differentiate between stationary and mobile terminals.
Stationary terminals are fixed at the point of sale and require a wired connection to power and the internet. Mobile terminals are portable and operate independently using a battery and a WLAN or SIM connection. When choosing your device, make sure its features align with your business needs.
.
Which payment methods should your terminal support?
Not all card payment providers support the most important payment methods. In Germany, the most commonly used payment card is the girocard. It is important to know that processing girocard payments is usually more affordable for merchants than processing international debit or credit cards. For that reason, girocard acceptance should be included with favourable conditions.
Your terminal should also be able to process international debit and credit cards, especially Visa and Mastercard. This ensures that you can serve all customers, including those from abroad.
In addition, your terminal should support contactless payments so customers can pay using their smartphones or smartwatches. Most modern terminals come with this feature already included.
.
What are the differences between card readers?
Terms like credit card reader, payment terminal, card terminal, debit card terminal (EC) or debit card device (EC) are often used to describe the same thing, which is a device for accepting card payments. However, depending on the version and area of use, there are significant differences that affect the functionality and possible applications.
One key difference lies in the types of payments accepted. Some devices only support girocard payments. Others accept international credit cards such as Visa, Mastercard or American Express, as well as mobile payments like Apple Pay and Google Pay. Which payment methods your device actually supports depends on its features and the specific contract you sign with your provider.
.
How does a card reader work?
Card readers can be used for all cashless payments, including debit cards, girocard, credit cards, smartphones or other digital payment methods. Most modern terminals support all major types of payments.
However, the actual payment methods available depend on the service contract you sign with your provider. Just like a mobile phone needs a service plan, your terminal needs a payment service agreement to operate.
Card readers also require an internet connection. This can be established via LAN, Wi-Fi or a SIM card.
