FAQs about fraud prevention
Here you will find a detailed overview of PAYONE's supplementary risk management services, which can be booked as optional add-ons.
- What is Address Check Basic?
The PAYONE platform offers various optional extensions, including Address Check Basic, which is part of its risk management solutions. Address Check Basic allows the PAYONE platform to verify the existence of addresses, including street name, house number (checked only in relation to the postal code, but not for actual existence), postal code, city and country. Typing errors and incomplete entries are automatically corrected and completed where possible. The reference data is continuously updated to ensure accuracy.
Address Check Basic supports the verification of addresses in 20 countries, including: Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, USA.
- What is the Address Check Person?
The PAYONE platform offers various optional extensions, including Address Check Person, which is part of its risk management solutions. Address Check Person includes all features of Address Check Basic and additionally verifies whether a person (first and/or last name) is registered at a given address. This service is only available for addresses in Germany.
Not all residents of Germany are covered by this verification process. If the check reports that a person or name is not known at a specific address, it does not necessarily mean the person does not reside there. Business addresses and other special cases may not always return conclusive results.
- What is the Arvato Infoscore Credit Check?
The PAYONE platform offers various optional extensions, including credit checks via Arvato Infoscore (B2C) as part of its risk management solutions. Different levels of credit checks are supported.
The basic check includes the verification of so-called "hard" negative characteristics such as consumer insolvency proceedings, an arrest warrant for an affidavit or enforcement of an affidavit.
The professional version extends the check to include "medium" negative characteristics such as a default summons, enforcement order or foreclosure, as well as "soft" negative characteristics such as an initiated debt collection process, the continuation of an out-of-court debt collection process after partial payment, or the termination of such a process due to lack of prospects.
The premium version includes all these checks and additionally determines a credit score, which allows for a more precise assessment in the presence of negative characteristics.
The most advanced option, Premium plus Informa Score, goes one step further by providing a predictive analysis based on mathematical and statistical methods if no negative characteristics are found.
Before conducting a credit check, the PAYONE platform also allows for Address Check Basic or Address Check Person to be performed. Credit checks are only available for addresses and individuals in Germany. They only provide information on whether negative characteristics are recorded for the requested person at the given address but do not confirm whether the person actually exists or resides at that address.
- What is the Boniversum Credit Check?
The PAYONE platform offers various optional extensions, including the Boniversum Credit Check as part of its risk management solutions. Our PAYONE platform enables credit checks to be carried out by Boniversum (B2C).
The credit check is only available for addresses and individuals in Germany and includes postal address verification with correction if necessary, personal identification at the specified postal address and the identification of special addresses in currently eight different address groups.
- What is the Bank Account Check and what is checked?
The PAYONE platform offers various optional extensions, including the Bank Account Check as part of its risk management solutions. The Bank Account Check checks the plausibility of account details (account number and sort code) for numerous countries. For this purpose, the IBAN (International Bank Account Number) provided is broken down into the components bank code and account number and these are checked according to national regulations.
For Germany and Austria, a variety of algorithms, as well as data from the Deutsche Bundesbank and the Austrian National Bank, serve as the basis for verification. The database of sort codes and verification procedures is continuously updated, ensuring a high level of accuracy in verifying sort codes and account numbers. In many other European countries, account details are validated using a check digit procedure or syntax-based verification. Detailed information can be found in our service description.
- What is the POS Check?
The PAYONE platform offers various optional extensions, including the POS check as part of its risk management solutions. The POS check verifies the provided bank account details against a blacklist database. This blacklist contains bank accounts with outstanding direct debit returns from the retail sector (Point of Sale). The database is supplied by numerous well-known companies in the retail industry.
- What is the Non Consumer Account (NCA) Check incl. KUNO?
The PAYONE platform offers various optional extensions, including the Non Consumer Account (NCA) Check as part of its risk management solutions. The NCA Check verifies whether the provided bank account details belong to publicly accessible bank accounts.
The NCA Check does not directly indicate fraudulent intent based solely on the identification of public accounts. However, publicly accessible bank accounts pose a significantly higher risk potential. Additionally, the check verifies whether the specified bank account appears on the KUNO list of police-reported stolen cards.
- What is the retailer ELV Blacklist?
The PAYONE platform offers various optional extensions, including the merchant ELV Blacklist as part of its risk management solutions. Our PAYONE platform supports the automatic blacklisting of buyers who have had a returned direct debit transaction. These buyers are blocked from making further purchases with the merchant until the outstanding transaction has been settled. The bank account details of the buyer serve as the criteria for blocking.
This service is available for Germany and Austria. Manual addition or removal of bank accounts is not possible.
- What is the Creditcard Check?
The Creditcard Check verifies the plausibility of credit card data (so-called LUHN Check). However, this check does not determine whether the credit card details are actually valid. The existence of the card, the complete correctness of the credit card data and the available credit limit are only verified in real-time when executing a transaction (e.g. authorisaton or purchase).
- What is the BIN Check?
The PAYONE platform offers various optional extensions, including the BIN check as part of its risk management solutions. The BIN (Bank Identification Number) refers to the first six digits of a credit card number and identifies the issuing bank. When the BIN Check is activated, the PAYONE Platform verifies whether the billing country matches the country of the issuing bank.
The identification of a card's issuing country via the BIN is not always entirely precise. If the country cannot be determined with certainty, the transaction will still be processed.
If there is a discrepancy between the two countries, the transaction can either be declined or subjected to an additional verification step. The BIN Check is available for all countries and can only be performed during a transaction via the PAYONE platform (e.g. authorisation or purchase).
- What is the IP Check?
The PAYONE platform offers various optional extensions, including the IP check as part of its risk management solutions. The IP Check verifies the country of origin of a buyer's IP address, comparing it with the country of the billing address.
The identification process relies on external databases, but the accuracy and correctness of the determined country for a given IP address cannot be guaranteed.
If the IP address country and the billing address country do not match, the transaction will be declined when the IP Check is activated. The IP Check is available for all countries and can only be performed during a transaction via the PAYONE platform (e.g. authorisation or purchase).
- What is the so-called Velocity Check?
The PAYONE platform offers various optional extensions, including the Velocity check as part of its risk management solutions. The Velocity Check monitors the repeated use of specific attributes, such as an email address, IP address, credit card number or bank account details, within a defined time frame. It allows merchants to set limits on how many purchase attempts can be made using one or multiple of these attributes within a specified period.
If the number of purchase attempts with a specific attribute exceeds the allowed limit within the defined timeframe, the attribute is temporarily blocked for a configurable period. Any further purchase attempts involving a blocked attribute may be declined by PAYONE. The Velocity Check is available for all countries and can only be performed during a transaction (e.g. authorisation or purchase) via the PAYONE platform. It also counts purchase attempts that were declined by the bank.
- What is the IP Country Filter?
The PAYONE platform offers various optional extensions, including the IP country filter as part of its risk management solutions. The IP Country checks the country of origin of a buyer's IP address and allows merchants to define a blacklist (negative list) or whitelist (positive list) of countries from which transactions can be initiated. This enables the approval or rejection of payments based on the buyer’s location.
The identification process relies on external databases, but the accuracy and correctness of the determined country for a given IP address cannot be guaranteed.
The IP Country Filter is available for all countries and can only be performed during a transaction via the PAYONE platform (e.g. authorisation or purchase).
